Introduction

Genyen Mountains is part of Shaluli Range. It is located 700km west to Chengdu and close to the Tibetan border. It is a big massif of over 100 mountains. Most of them are unclimbed mountains of 4000+ and 5000+ meters. Highest mountain of Geynen (6204) is called Mount Genie itself. Mount Genie is also the highest mountain of the whole Shaluli Shan Range. The nearest town of Genyen Mountains are Litang and Batang.
Genyen Massif is a big place. It is located by the borderland with TAR (Tibet Autonomous Region). North to Genyen is Haizishan Massif where Mt. Xiashe and Zhajin Jiabo are at. Litang Town is located east to the massif and Batang Town is located by west to the massif. It is 75km to the town of Litang and 60km east to the town of Batang. The national highway 318 goes through its north. In recent years since 2018 there has been constructions of new roads that has made mountains in Genyen easy to access.
Most of the mountains in Genyen are not climbed and there are still mountains that have no official photos available. The valleys in its east and central part have not been explored officially and no photos of mountains have been published. The big mountains in Genyen Massif include Mt. Kaimailong, Mt. Xiazha Gana, Mt. Shangchu Chogo, Mt. Yangmolong, Mt. Hutsa, Mt. Xiangba, etc.

How to get there

From Chengdu to Genyen one first gets to Litang, where it’s easy to drive to in 2 days or 1 and half days. From Litang it is 2 hours to get to east and south sides of Genyen. To get to the north of Genyen it’s another 2-3 hours drive into the grassland from Litang. And to go to the west of Genyen via Batang, it is 200km from Litang to Batang and another 2 hours drive from Batang to the villages by west of Genyen.

Climbing Season

The usual climbing season to Mt. Genyen is from April to May and from October to November. Winter climb is also possible here.

Mountains

Genyen Massif is a big cluster of mountains that covers a big area between Litang and Batang. The massif from north to south is 70km and from east to west is 80km. Different mountains are accessed from different sides.

There are Yangmolong Mountains by its northwest. Among these mountains there is Mt. Yangmolong 6060m, Mt. 6033 and Mt. Laoche Zela at 5833m. Southeast to Yangmolong there are rocky mountains Mt. Chongben Halo (5376m) and Mt. Chongben Haga (5217m). Yangmolong Mountains is one of the less explored places in Sichuan. There were a few recorded expeditions to Yangmolong.

By north part of Genyen Massif is the Shangchu Chogo Mountains including Mt. Shangchu Chogo (5863m) and its side peaks, Mt. Zaga Chaji (5835m), Mt. Chogo Nongzi (5760m), and 3 other mountains above 5500 meters. No summits have been recorded to these mountains here.

Western Range of Genyen include mountains such as Imu Gongga (5838m), Mt. Zedeng Bala (5575m), Mt. Zedeng Haoma (Mt. Xialong Rezha 5676m), Mt. Zedeng Gongma (5498m), Mt. Jonong Gaci (5568m), and many other peaks that either don’t have names or names unknown.

Central part of Genyen has mountains such as Mt. Hutsa (5863m), Mt. Zanong Gajin (5912m), Mt. Ebamei(5622m), Mt. Xianreri (5579m), Mt. Xiaqiong (5716m), Mt. Xiangba (5965m) and its side peaks, Mt. Phurba (5570m), Mt. Dorjecha (5560m), Mt, Zendu (5680m) and many unnamed mountains or names unknown.

Southern Range of Genyen Massif include its highest peak Mt. Genie (6205m), Mt. Xiazha Gana (5807m), Mt. Haga Rezha (5598m), Mt. Gon Yamin (5440m), Mt. Kaimailong (5873m) and other peaks on same ridge. The valleys of its southeast include Zongna, Zongga and Kai zero photos available.

East of Genyen include Mt. Kari Ganzong (5673m) and Mt. Asha Gongge (5783m) and their side peaks.

Approaching:

South
First get to Litang and from there it’s 2 hours drive to get to the villages by south of Genyen to Mountains such as Mt. Genie, Mt. Xiazha Gana, and mountains not only by its south but also mountains by its east and central part includin Mt. Hutsa, Mt. Zanong Gajin, Mt. Xiangba and Mt. Xiaqiong, Mt. Ashagongge and Mt. Kaimailong.

West
West side of Genyen one needs to get to Batang first. With the good road from Batang it takes about 2 hours to get to the villages of Gemu to access to the Zedeng Mountains.

Northwest
By its north west there are two valleys that one leads to Shangchu Chogo north and other one leads to north of Yangmolong. The villages there have basic roads.

Essential places to be looking at while planning trips to Genyen include Litang and Batang.
